Cowal Highland Gathering Announces 2013 Chieftain

One of Scotland’s most respected politicians has been unveiled as the Honorary Chieftain of this year’s Cowal Highland Gathering.

Rt Hon Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, who was born on the Isle of Islay but spent most of his childhood in Dunoon, will accept the salute from the spectacular massed bands as well as present the trophies in the prestigous Highland Dancing and Pipe Band competitions.

The role of Chieftain is a far cry from selling souvenir programmes for the event, which is what Lord Robertson - a former pupil of Kirn Primary and Dunoon Grammar Schools - did in his younger days.

’It is a huge pleasure and honour for me to be Chieftain of the 2013 Cowal Gathering,’ he said.

’Having lived most of my youth a stones throw away from the stadium and been a games programme seller in the streets in all weathers, it is a true career high point for me.’

’The Cowal Highland Gathering is one of Scotland’s premier events and known throughout the world for its stunning spectacles. To be at it is thrill enough - to be the Chieftain is to achieve a personal pinnacle.’

CHG Chair Ronnie Cairns said: ’we are obviously thrilled to have someone of Lord Robertson’s stature as this year’s Chieftain.’

’He has always been a great supporter of Dunoon and the surrounding area and is proud of his many connections to the town.’

’He remains one of its most high profile sons, and we all very much look forward to welcoming him back to Dunoon for what is shaping up to be a fantastic event.’
