Cowells plan transatlantic trip to Cowal

If your surname happens to be Cowell, where better to host a family reunion than the famous Cowal Highland Gathering?

Living several thousand miles away hasn’t put the Cowell family from America off one bit. In fact, nearly 20 of them are gearing up to make the trip to Dunoon at the end of August.

Various branches of the family are making their way from Texas, Georgia, Arizona and California to gather at the world’s greatest Highland Gathering.

The plan was hatched after Dale Cowell, who lives in Comfort, Texas, began researching his family background.

What he discovered made him want to come to Scotland and find out more. So now, accompanied by three of his five sons and various other family members and friends, he’s preparing for the trip of a lifetime.

At least two of the party don’t plan to simply sit back and soak up Cowal’s famous atmosphere. Dale’s son Walter and grandson Jac – who live in California - have already signed up to run the 5K.

Cowal Highland Gathering chair Ronnie Cairns was delighted to learn of the family trip.

“It’s pretty special to think that this family has chosen our event to base its reunion around,” he said. “We’ll obviously do our best to put on a real spectacle for the Cowells and all the thousands of other people who are counting down the days until the Gathering kicks off.”

“We’re delighted with how the preparations are going, and look forward to another fantastic Gathering. I’d urge anyone who hasn’t bought their ticket yet to ensure they’re a part of the action by securing their spot in advance, whether in person from the Dunoon office or on the website.”

This year’s Cowal Highland Gathering – which takes place in association with charity partner Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) – runs from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 August.
