Dunoon shops pull out the stops for the Gathering

The piping, dancing and heavy athletics might be the most hotly contested events at Cowal Highland Gathering (CHG), but there’s an equally serious competition going on in the centre of Dunoon.

Some 30 shops around the town are currently displaying one of the trophies which will be presented at the event. The one which is judged to be the most strikingly displayed will win a £250 cash prize plus its own silverware – the Cowal Gathering Trophy.

There will also be two runners-up, who will receive recognition of their efforts in the shape of something else to show off in their window displays!

CHG chair Ronnie Cairns said: “There’s a real buzz about the town already, and its fantastic to see the Gathering trophies so proudly displayed by so many shops.

“The Cowal Highland Gathering is not just concerned with those who pay to come on the day. It’s an historic event which belongs to everyone who lives in Dunoon and the surrounding area, and initiatives such as this help to get people involved who might otherwise not have the chance to show their support.

“I’d like to thank the PA23 BIDS team for sponsoring the window-dressing competition. It’s going to be a hard one for the judges to adjudicate on when they make their assessment on Monday, but I’m sure we’ll have a worthy winner.”

The competition will be judged by three independent local people who have no association with either the Gathering or the shops themselves.
