Raise a glass to the winners of window-dressing competition

The celebrations for Cowal Highland Gathering (CHG) week kicked off in style with the announcement Argyll Vintners/The Sewing Bee have won the annual window dressing display, with runners-up Well Pharmacy and Walker Home and Garden.

As well as a £250 first prize the Hillfoot Street shop has also won its very own silverware – the Cowal Gathering Trophy.

Each year the CHG organisers challenge traders in the Kirn and Dunoon area to display one of the Gathering’s many trophies in as eye-catching a way as possible.

Around 65 shops rose to the challenge and had their window displays inspected by an independent panel of three judges.

CHG Chair Ronnie Cairns said: “What a great start to the best weekend in the calendar. The support from local traders is tremendous and I’d like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s competition.

“As well as having a competitive element, is an opportunity to see, close up, some of the silverware which will be fought over in the Stadium during the three days of the Gathering. Many people put in a huge effort to ensure their displays promote the spirit of Cowal Highland Gathering and I’d like to congratulate everyone for getting into the festival mood.

“It’s always a very difficult competition to judge but, having come second last year, Argyll Vinters/The Sewing Bee went the extra mile to be worthy winners.

“We can now focus on the Gathering itself and concentrate on three days of fierce competition, excellent entertainment and lots of family fun.”
