Cowal Highland Gathering shortlisted in major awards
Scotland’s most spectacular Highland Games has been shortlisted in one of the country’s most prestigious tourism awards.
Cowal Highland Gathering (CHG) is one of only four finalists in the ‘Best Cultural Event or Festival’ category of the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards 2016.
The news is a major feather in the cap of an event which has provided traditional Highland entertainment for generations of people from across the world, and which has transformed itself in recent years to become one of Scotland’s premier family-friendly events.
CHG chair Ronnie Cairns said it was a fantastic vote of confidence in the Gathering, and a reflection of the overwhelming majority of feedback received from those who’ve made the trip to Dunoon for the last weekend in August over the last few years.
“This is a major awards programme, so we’re obviously delighted to have made the final four in a category as broad as ‘Best Cultural Event or Festival’”, he added.
“Over the last few years we have worked extremely hard to broaden our range of attractions so as to appeal to the widest possible audience, and our spectator numbers and their feedback tell us that our efforts are paying off.
“Of course the traditional Highland Games elements are still at the heart of the Gathering – the World Highland Dancing Championships, the Cowal Pipe Band Championships, the spectacular heavy athletics and wrestling and the ceilidh music. But it also now features a whole host of other attractions designed to provide entertainment for everyone, whether you’re five or 95!
“The fact that we’ve now been shortlisted in the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards 2016 tells us we’re heading in the right direction, and we very much look forward to showcasing the Gathering to the cream of the Highland and Islands tourist industry at the awards ceremony next month.”
The winners of the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards – now in their 12th year – will be announced at a ceremony in Inverness on November 4.
