Western Ferries ramps up its support for Cowal Highland Gathering

Scotland’s most spectacular Highland Games is celebrating after learning of a major sponsorship boost.

Dunoon-based ferry company Western Ferries (Clyde) Limited, which has in the past sponsored Cowal Highland Gathering’s (CHG) closing Fireworks display, has committed to increase its sponsorship of the event to £8,000 per year over the next three years.

The news was welcomed by CHG chair Ronnie Cairns, who said such a visible vote of confidence from such a high profile local company was bound to have positive knock-on effects for the event.

“This is great news, and we are very grateful to Western Ferries for their ongoing support of our event,” he added.

“Western Ferries’ support of the Games also goes beyond this direct financial support. Every year they provide additional sailings, thereby enabling the competitors, visitors and exhibitors to commute with minimal delay.

“Having the backing of major companies such as Western Ferries shows that the local business community not only sees our event going from strength to strength but actually wants to be a part of its continued development.”

In the past, Western Ferries sponsorship has covered the cost of the iconic fireworks display which traditionally brings the Gathering to a close on the Saturday night.

“A proportion of this sponsorship will still be spent on the fireworks, which will continue to be branded as the ‘Western Ferries’ Fireworks Display”, Ronnie said.

“We are delighted to secure the funding of the display for the foreseeable future.

“The remainder of the £8,000 will go towards ensuring that we attract the maximum possible number of spectators and put on the best possible show for those lucky enough to have tickets.

“This is a time of transition for Cowal Highland Gathering, as we seek to broaden its appeal while at the same time retaining and enhancing its core competitive and cultural elements.

“We’ve taken some very positive steps over the last few months, and we’re excited about how our plans for this year’s event are coming together.

“With the support of companies such as Western Ferries, we’re confident that Cowal Highland Gathering will cement its position as one of Scotland’s premier family events.”

Western Ferries’ Managing Director Gordon Ross said the firm was delighted to increase its sponsorship for such an historic local event.

“We have recently celebrated our 40th year of operation, and during that time have enjoyed tremendous support from the Cowal community,” he added.

“Hence Western Ferries were very keen to boost our support of that community, and what better way to do that than to make a meaningful long-term commitment to perhaps its most famous export. Western Ferries’ wider sponsorship programme supports many local events, groups, charities and individuals with the total investment running to tens of thousands of pounds every year.

“Cowal Highland Gathering has been wowing spectators for 120 years and I am confident it will still be doing so for another 120 years.

“It is a fantastic event of which Cowal as a whole should be extremely proud, and I have no doubt that this year’s Gathering will be the most enjoyable yet.

“Western Ferries is proud to be associated with one of the highlights of the Scottish calendar, and we very much look forward to being there when the action kicks off at the end of August.”

This year’s Cowal Highland Gathering – which takes place in association with charity partner Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) – runs from Thursday 28 – Saturday 30 August.
