Cowal Highland Gathering boasts top music acts once again

Some of Scotland’s most exciting and dynamic traditional music acts are heading to Dunoon later this month to play their part in the world’s most spectacular Highland Games.

Cowal Highland Gathering’s McEwan’s Ceilidh Tent promises to be bursting at the seams as a succession of top bands take to the stage.

A total of four acts are currently fine-tuning their sets in preparation for what promises to be a fantastic afternoon of musical entertainment.

Leading the pack once again is one of Scotland’s most popular established ceilidh bands, Oban-based Skipinnish. This is the third consecutive year that Skipinnish has headlined the event.

In the past two years the band, led by partners Andrew Stevenson and Angus McPhail, has brought the house down with its infectious brand of traditional music with a modern twist.

Supporting Skipinnish will be three acts with very different – but equally exciting – approaches to Highland music. First up will be The Gunna Sound Ceilidh Band, led by Campbell Brown from the Isle of Tiree and Johnny Scoular from Lochaline.

Gunna Sound has been called ‘one of the very best ceilidh bands in Scotland’ by no less that Skipinnish’s Angus McPhail. Providing their audience with a dazzling array of musical styles and genres, they also have a reputation for combining their music with plenty of good craic – ensuring the McEwan’s Ceilidh Tent entertainment kicks off with a bang.

Next up will be husband and wife duo Don and Kathleen MacDonald, who have performed together as Eriskay Lilt since 1995. Now, six albums and a large and loyal following later, the band is preparing to wow the Cowal crowd with its combination of lively Scottish ceilidh music and popular vocal numbers encompassing a variety of styles from Scottish, Irish and Country and Western favourites to more recent pop songs.

The final spot in the McEwan’s Ceilidh Tent line-up will be filled by the fantastic Dùn Mòr Ceilidh Band from the Isle of Tiree. Immersed in the Gàidhealach traditions, Dùn Mòr is the latest addition to a long line of bands from the tiny Hebridean island.

It consists of three young Tirisdich - Eilidh ’The Ceilidh’ MacFadyen and Anna and Jamie MacDonald, who have been immersed in West Coast music from a young age. A strong lineup of accordion, guitar, vocals and fiddle guarantees a true west coast hòro-gheallaidh to keep the crowd bouncing.

Cowal Highland Gathering chair Ronnie Cairns said he was delighted to have once again secured such a high quality musical line-up. “We received fantastic feedback on the Ceilidh Tent entertainment in the past, so we’ve set the bar pretty high for this year’s event. However, I’m confident that the Gathering’s reputation for providing the very best in traditional music entertainment will be even stronger once these four bands have brought the house down,” he added.
“This line-up promises not only to excite existing ceilidh music fans but also generate scores of new followers.

“All four of these acts are in their own way trailblazers for contemporary Highland ceilidh music, and people travel significant distances to hear their incredible live sets.

“The Gathering provides a unique opportunity to enjoy their talents up close - in one place, on one day. It’s a chance not to be missed.”

Skipinnish is also playing at the new Gig at the Gathering event on the Friday night (August 28), which is sponsored by Argyll Ferries and will feature a cask ale bar, whisky and gin bar and a hog roast BBQ.

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “We are delighted to support The Cowal Highland Gathering, one of year’s most important occasions for Scottish culture and heritage and a firm fixture on the national events calendar. The ceilidh tent is always a hive of activity and we are sure that this year’s line-up of top bands will provide some fantastic entertainment for those in attendance.”
