Organisers of the Cowal Highland Gathering (CHG) are counting down the weeks until they welcome thousands of competitors and spectators to the world’s most spectacular Highland Games with the launch of a new video.

Celebrating the Gathering’s unique atmosphere the video captures highlights of three days of fierce competition together with each of the elements, which makes Cowal Highland Gathering one of Scotland’s best days out.

And with just four months until the Gathering kicks off, preparations are well underway to ensure the three-day extravaganza at the end of August lives up to its reputation as one of Scotland’s biggest and best annual events.

Among the attractions already inked in for this year is a stellar line up of traditional bands for the ever-popular Friday night Gig at the Gathering (GATG) and for the Ceilidh Tent the following day.

The 2018 GATG, which has been sold out every year since it was introduced, will be headlined by Cowal favourites Trail West, with Beinn Lee and The American Rogues in support.

The Ceilidh Tent will boast The American Rogues, Beinn Lee, Heron Valley and Tide Lines, the last two of which are back by popular demand having wowed last year’s Gig at the Gathering. Heron Valley also provide the soundtrack to the main video with their single ‘Home’.

The music is just one of the Gathering’s many attractions. Possibly the biggest – and the one with the most competitors – is of course the Highland Dancing.

Entries are already flooding in from the world’s best Highland Dancers, for whom a Cowal trophy represents the pinnacle of their sport.

Last year a record number of dancers travelled to the Gathering, which hosts both the Scottish and World Highland Dancing Championships and is the most popular and spectacular highland dancing competition on the planet.

As in previous years, CHG will welcome competitors from all corners of the globe, with dancers from Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all flocking to Dunoon with the aim of wresting the silverware from the local competitors. Dancing entries are open now on the CHG website at

The dancing isn’t the only international competition at the Gathering. It also hosts the only international heavy athletics contest in Scotland, which usually attracts athletes from Iceland, Germany and other European countries.

In addition, the traditional wrestling events often include competitors from Iceland and France – two hotbeds of traditional wrestling talent.

The piping, too, promises to be a major attraction as always, with bands and solo pipers battling it out to be crowned Cowal champions.

CHG chair Ronnie Cairns said he was excited about the launch of the new video and that this year’s event was already shaping up to be a classic.

“We’re only four months away from welcoming visitors from the four corners of the globe to this year’s Gathering. We’re thrilled to use the Heron Valley hit ‘Home’, because for many people, not necessarily from Cowal, coming to the Gathering feels like coming home.

“We’re delighted with how the preparations have been going, and we’ll be using the four months we have left to fine-tune what I’m sure will be another fantastic Gathering weekend,” he added.

“Every year we win new fans with our unique blend of attractions, and I’m sure this year will be no different.

“Cowal has always been one of the highlights of the highland games season, and we’re confident that our spectators – whether old timers or first timers, young or young at heart – will thoroughly enjoy an unforgettable weekend of action and fun.

“We’re very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to Dunoon in August and to showcasing some of the very best of what Scotland has to offer.”
